I chose an award template because I believe it is
important to recognize students’ accomplishments and giving simple awards such
as these are easy to make. As we learned from Maslow, students require needs to
be met before they will show academic progress. One of those needs is
self-esteem. Awards can be given for things as simple as a student showing kindness,
following directions, or keeping their desk neat. The modification on this
template could be changed to match the students’ name and accomplishment.
Because this is so easy and quick to make, awards can be made weekly.
After saving the template, I changed the top writing
with the school’s name. Then I changed the title, Certificate of Award, to A
Special Award. The picture on the
certificate looks appropriate for 1st or 2nd grade, so I
wanted a title to match that age level. I changed the black font to a few other
colors to make it more appealing. Then I added a clip art of a gold ribbon. I
also changed who the certificate was being presented by; the principal to
teacher.
I plan to use award certificates in my classroom to
recognize the many achievements of my students as well as fostering their self-esteem.
Giving awards weekly can be challenging to keep up with so a plan should be put
in place. For example keep a list of students and set a number of students to
get a certificate each week. Rotate the students making sure they all get one
by the end of the month. Set a time each week to present the certificates.

Theresa, your award certificate looks quite nice. It did not occur to me to load up my document as an attachment. I thought I had to publish the actual document on the blog. Maybe I should have emailed you for assistance :-).
ReplyDeleteI have come to find out something about my high school students that I would not have of previously believed; they appreciate even the smallest recognitions and rewards. Case in point, I took one of my classes to another teacher's class, to conduct minor repair last school year. The reward was a fresh baked cookie. At the present time, these same students still remember, and speak with gratitude about the cookie they received a year ago! I said all this to agree with your great post!
Theresa, I think this is such a great idea! Recognizing student accomplishments are so important in the classroom. It gives the students motivation, something to strive for, and reassurance that they are doing a good job. It also calls attention to specific desired behaviors which, in my opinion, is more effective than just saying "Good job." I think it is smart to have a plan when incorporating the certificates into the classroom. It gives something for the students to look forward to and work towards throughout the month.

ReplyDeleteTheresa, I agree that's important to recognize students' accomplishments. Students can receive awards for perfect attendance, or even if they are a good in a specific subject. Receiving awards motivates them to do better and makes them good about themselves. I would definitely use this template in my classroom
Theresa, your award certificate is nice. I also think this is a way to show students appreciation of hard work. Students should be recognized for their accomplishments and this is an easy way to do such things. I think you did a great job on modifying the certificate.
ReplyDeleteTheresa,
ReplyDeleteYou are so right! Awards certificates are a great way to boost a child's confidence. The best part is a teacher can set any type of goals and then award the child when they have accomplished them. Even as an adult, I enjoy receiving awards. Sometimes just the acknowledgement of achieving something is a motivator to do better.
I really like how you did the award template. There are too many times students good attitudes and deeds go unrecognized. I think what you did was fantastic and I also really liked your rotation system. This way the students all get awards so no one gets left out. Fantastic work!!
