I chose an award template because I believe it is
important to recognize students’ accomplishments and giving simple awards such
as these are easy to make. As we learned from Maslow, students require needs to
be met before they will show academic progress. One of those needs is
self-esteem. Awards can be given for things as simple as a student showing kindness,
following directions, or keeping their desk neat. The modification on this
template could be changed to match the students’ name and accomplishment.
Because this is so easy and quick to make, awards can be made weekly.
After saving the template, I changed the top writing
with the school’s name. Then I changed the title, Certificate of Award, to A
Special Award. The picture on the
certificate looks appropriate for 1st or 2nd grade, so I
wanted a title to match that age level. I changed the black font to a few other
colors to make it more appealing. Then I added a clip art of a gold ribbon. I
also changed who the certificate was being presented by; the principal to
teacher.
I plan to use award certificates in my classroom to
recognize the many achievements of my students as well as fostering their self-esteem.
Giving awards weekly can be challenging to keep up with so a plan should be put
in place. For example keep a list of students and set a number of students to
get a certificate each week. Rotate the students making sure they all get one
by the end of the month. Set a time each week to present the certificates.

Teacher Resources
Hi everyone! I would like to share with you some resources that I have found to be very helpful in the classroom. While they are never used to replace instruction, they are fantastic tools for practice and review. First I will share one particular site that is good for building math fluency, problem solving, and practice skills. It is called Hooda Math and serves grades kindergarten through high school.www.hoodamath.com
Another great site that can be used to reinforce math skills is ABCYA. There is a bonus with this resource because not only does it have math practice, but it contains word and letter activities, strategy practice, and even Social Studies. www.abcya.com
For reading activities and practice, I utilize Tumble books and Starfall. Both of these sites have online story books that students can take comprehension quizzes on. You will also find phonics instruction and math activities on Starfall. www.tumblebooks.com www.starfall.com
Let's not forget science and Social Studies. https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/category/new is wonderful for physics and chemistry simulations and https://info.explorelearning.com offers online science lab activities.

GameStarMechanic Experience
My video game
Wow! I have to say experimenting with Gamestarmechanic was quite an experience for me! I grew up in the 70's where the only game available was a video condole that had ping pong game that was in black in white. It had three speeds as I recall. Later in the 80's we got an Atari. My favorite games was Pac Man and Pit Fall. Many of the games in the quest reminded me of Pit Fall. Children today have a wonderful advantage of developing technology.
Gamestarmechanic fosters creative thinking as well as problem solving. Teachers can use this tool to engage and motivate students in grades 4-9 in all content areas. Background knowledge is not required because the game design site takes participants through a quest. Throughout the quest you venture through a narrative, interact with games, practice designing, editing, and fixing issues. As a reward, items are earned after each game that can be used later for designing. All you need is internet and flashplayer 10 and the games can be played and designed at home or school.
My favorite part of this experience was designing the game. Since I have no game playing experience, some of the levels in the quest were very challenging for me.
